Scholars was created by Joyce and Alf using a concept of old school memories with both the decor and the menu being inspired by childhood meals.

When you eat at Scholars you take a tray to the counter and choose from large selection of hot plate dishes. The day to day offerings change, but there are generally carvery choices (served with homemade Yorkshire Puddings), pies (cottage or steak) and mince & dumplings all with self service steamed veg, potatoes and gravy. The desserts have that retro feel too with jam roly poly, spotted dick and other homemade delights on offer.

If you dont have time to eat in, all meals can be prepared to takeaway. Kids are more than welcome with a ‘Little Scholars’ menu there is a choice of fish fingers, chicken nuggets or they can have a smaller portion from the main menu. High chairs are available and there is easy access for pushchairs.

Large groups and parties can be catered for and Scholars will stay open later for bookings over 10. Both birthdays and weddings can be catered for, either from the menu or buffets.

Each table is supplied with a themed cryptic quiz for a bit of light entertainment. There is good access for wheelchairs on the ground floor and an easy access toilet too.

I have eaten breakfast at Scholars on on occasions before going to work. I believe it to be the best breakfast in town for quality and price.
