East Sussex restaurant guide

Proximity to London combined with a steady influx of tourists and eager restaurant-goers ensures that East Sussex’s dining scene continues to flourish, offering up everything from traditional pubs to more experimental fusion restaurants.

Brighton and Hove may be the shining stars, with its sheer range of choice and exclusive celebrity-owned restaurants. But the dining scene certainly does not begin and end here. The towns and villages strewn along the Sussex coastline offer diners real variety, ranging from wonderful seafood fresh from the boat to upmarket oriental cuisine.

The beautiful, undulating landscape of the South Downs area between Eastbourne and Newhaven is the perfect place to head to for fresh fish. The homely Bridge Street restaurant in Newhaven offers what must be some of the county’s freshest, since it is run by a local fisherman (his chef wife then cooks the fish – straight off the boat!).

The fine Indian restaurant of Jali in Hastings opened in 2005 in the Chatsworth Hotel on the seafront and it quickly gained a number of plaudits and devoted followers. The Times Magazine picked Jali as one of the top 10 Indian restaurants in the southeast.
