Went for the Sunday carvery and at 7.30 in the evening the atmosphere was fantastic. A real family venue, very welcoming and warm.

Despite being busy the bar staff were attentive and cheerful, we were served our drinks very quickly and shown to our table without any delay.

The food was the disappointment. Only just mediocre for the most part and lacking in any sort of flavour. The roast spuds had been kept warm for a long time prior to serving and were dried out and leathery. The yorkie pud was so dry I couldn't cut it and when I did manage to pull a bit off it was absolutely tasteless. My companions said their meat was ok but mine although tender was so over cooked or kept warm for such a long time again it wasn't very tasty. To be fair though it was still the best thing on the plate.. What a shame!. If the carvery offering could be improved the Shire Inn would be a real winner. I am going to be keeping a close eye on the Shires customer reviews and as soon as I see a few from satisfied carvery customers we will return.

Visited The Old Shire this Lunchtime for a carvery, having heard the adverts on the local commercial Radio. We were shown to our table and left with a couple of menus. That's it basically. If we hadn't walked out after 30 minutes of non-service, we'd possibly be sitting there now, still waiting for someone to come and take our meal order!

Worse was yet to come when one of the staff followed us out of the restaurant with a snivelling apology begging us to return, saying that they weren't expecting any bookings for Lunch! Why are they spending money on Radio advertising then?

If this had been a 'one off' I might have put it down to bad luck, notwithstanding the fact that they were hardly rushed off their feet with about a dozen cars in the car park when we arrived, but a similar thing happened to us about four years ago at The Old Shire - then we were left for 45 minutes before we'd had enough and left.

It seems that instead of spending money on radio advertising, they'd do better to spend it on Staff.

    I won't give them a third chance!

What a shame. Why this need to always fix something that isn't broken? Have been going for well over 20 years and have tried twice since the new owners - won't bother a third time.

Will never being going back its under new management and most defiantly will not be going back.

One of the staff were very rude to a gentleman on the next table slamming down his food.

The portions have all been made smaller and prices have gone up , chips were anaemic and raw in parts usually go there all the time but will never be going back tables are lower than the chairs came out with sore backs didn't have starter and left after our mains as we were so unhappy with the service and food.

Very pleasantly surprised, the atmosphere was great and the food was super. The new menu was a hit on our table and shall recommend to all. It has recently been taken over so hoping for good things to come, must say they are off to a good start...

I have been to here many times but this to treat my wife on her birthday last night, but never again as the atmosphere was awful and rowdy. Food was not up to any standard, veg was cold the chips were greasy and poorly sliced - chippings not chips. The steak was as asked for and nice dessert was good value and well made so I will not recommend to anybody or friends when they visit me in Cornwall to go there. The staff were very good but it seemed under staffed as compared to many other times as they had to help in bar a lot which was also under staffed as a lot of people where wanting drink for as Saturday when there should be more staff on still you learn by your mistakes.

We have used the Shires at lunch time for around three years, there is a good menu that ranges from Italian dish's to the good old Ploughmans. Every friday & Sunday a carvery which is very good value as well a delicious.

The staff are to be commended for the Smiles and rapid service,Price of the food is not cheap but in comparison with other pubs within a ten mile radius, far better value for money, quality & quantity.

Evening can be busy so it is worth a call to check out the booking situation,we took some friends out and they were amazed at the quality as well as price.

So you can see that as we drive around six mile there and eat usually once a week, we are well pleased and it has edged out virtually all of our other venues.
