The Golden Cock was refurbished in 2012 and is in the picturesque village of Farnley Tyas just a few miles south of Huddersfield. The oldest parts of the pub are thought to date back over 400 years. On your arrival do look out for the weather vane on top of the newer part (built in the 1800's).

Open everyday from 12 serving food throughout the day. There's a special lunch and early evening menu with a fixed price depending on the number of courses. The brasserie menu is available at all times. On Sundays, roast dinners are served until 6 with a selection of meats including Hinchliffes beef.

There's outside seating to both the front and rear and dogs are welcome in the bar area.

I went to the restaurant 5pm Sunday, it was busy, we had a nice reception, menus quickly were given to us, orders were taken quickly, then we had a 40 minute wait for starters, I had wild mushrooms and poached egg, with salad garnish.
The egg was cold and hard, the mushrooms were lovely, small.

My main course was monk fish, appalling, stone cold, very small portion with tinned tomatoes on, and cold old roast potatoes, disgusting.

My father started with pâté large butter on the top, not much pâté, accompanied with 2 slices of well cooked garlic bread, and lots of lettuce. Not good.

He then had a sweet, fruit crumble, hardly any fruit , lots of crumble, with custard,.

I will not be returning, disappointed, I was expecting a lot better quality food, decor lovely, shame, I will not be recommending this restaurant.

I visited a few weeks ago for Sunday lunch. The pub hadn't been open long, and I think that showed in the service - things were slow and somewhat chaotic. We did, however, eventually end up with our food after a bit of a wait.

I started with wild mushrooms on toast with a poached egg; the mushrooms and the creamy sauce they were in were lovely and the egg was soft - however there was a taste of vinegar to the egg, presumably the chef had added too much to the poaching water. My roast dinner, was good although I've had better beef.

The pub has clearly had a lot spent on the refurbishment, and the setting is lovely - I can certainly imagine sitting outside with a pint in the summer months. Toilets are nice but the hand dryer is stuck right next to a urinal - why do designers keep doing this!? I expect the problems I experienced will be smoothed out.

I'll be giving it a few weeks before trying again - but I will return.

I visited for Sunday lunch recently. The booking that I'd made earlier in the week wasn't on the list but that didn't seem to be a problem (but didn't fill me with confidence!).

I thought the pub decor was nice, it was quite traditionally done but comfortable to sit in - it was also busy in the bar and outside.

We had a drink outside before heading in to the restaurant. We opted for the Sunday lunch menu and I ordered fishcake and roast lamb. The fishcake was delicious. My lamb was good, although a few of the vegetables were quite cold.

The service was slow. It took a good 45 minutes for the starters to arrive. I think we sat down to order at 1ish and it was 3 when we left after two courses. It's probably just teething problems, they had only been open a week.

I think it will definitely improve and I will go back again to try it.
