The Cow Shed takes it's name from the original use of the beautiful 16th century Grade 2 listed building it occupies in Wakefield. The Cow Shed is situated just outside the main shopping area of Wakefield, opposite the Post Office. The entrance to the restaurant is hidden away at the back of the restaurant - to get to it go through the archway at the left hand side of the restaurant.
Seating is split over two floors, with tables downstairs having a view of the restaurant's open kitchen. Food is modern British with example dishes being: braised fillet of cod served with olive oil mash, smoked pancetta, peas and a herb cream sauce; or porchini mushroom and spinach risotto with grilled goats cheese and lemon oil. In addition to the regular menu, there is a specials board which changes regularly. An early bird menu is available Tuesday to Saturday between 6pm and 7pm, and all evening on Mondays - this offers two courses for £13.95 or three for £16.95.
There is no car park, but some street parking is available and there is a large car park nearby which is free in the evenings.

Probably the best restaurant in Wakefield town centre. The restaurant is in a lovely old building with the dining area split across two floors - downstairs has a view into the kitchen which is nice.
Service is good, if a little sporadic - but the food is great, nothing flashy or over complicated but really well cooked dishes. Early bird menu is really good value, but even full price the good is good value.

I've had several very good meals at The Cow Shed recently.
The menu seems the change pretty regularly, and there are always a few specials too. The food is simple and uncomplicated, with dishes such as roast rump of lamb with roast butternut squash, rosemary and red wine jus (perfectly cooked lamb, well matched flavours) and medallions of beef fillet with gruyere dauphinoise potatoes, wild mushrooms and port jus (beef perfect, dauphinoise delicious but a little watery) are typical dishes. Everything is cooked to order in the open kitchen.
Service is attentive and the staff are friendly without being obtrusive, I think in four or five visits the only problem I've was a forgotten drink - this was corrected and apologised for straight away.
Booking is advisable, especially on a Friday/Saturday night. Some items on the menu are expensive (but the cost seems fair given the quality, and the ingredients) but there are some cheaper options too.

Although a little pricier than most places to eat in Wakefield the Cow Shed is definitely worth a visit. It's quite a small restaurant but the food was amazing!
It's worth booking in advance as I've tried to visit since on spec, but there were no tables available.

Love this place. Lots of meat dishes which my companions loved. As a veggy there wasn't a lot on the actual menu for me, but the waitress talked to the chef and came back with lots of other options. It is rare to be spoilt for choice and the food was fantastic.
