Wandered along from hotel to find somewhere to eat and picked Sopranos. We hadn't booked but were early enough to get a table. Restaurant is only small. Service was good, food was lovely. Risottos were tasty. Profiteroles were perfectly thawed.
The restaurant was obviously popular. Would go again. Didn't use toilets but had to mark it for review.
Place deserves recognition hence the review.

We visit Pompey quite regularly, and discovered Sopranos in Palmerston Road last year - on our first visit our initial impression was that it was a little unprepossessing - it looks more like a cafe rather than a restaurant (the only reason I've given a lower mark for atmosphere - I imagine an evening booking would adjust the mark upwards), but we were very impressed with the food, which was very obviously freshly prepared and cooked, unlike in so many other places, where just reheated stuff is served as fresh. We were so impressed that we made a return visit to Sopranos last week (August 2010), on a Thursday early evening - we were lucky to get a table as we hadn't booked (there were three of us). I had the bruschetta to start and it was the nicest I'd ever had in a restaurant, well presented and a delicious dressing on the salad leaves, and the goats cheese was just right, my husband had the mussels, which he raved about, and daughter had the mushroom starter, which she also thoroughly enjoyed. Daughter and I had the chicken risotto for our main course, and for once, knew immediately that it was freshly cooked (I've found when dining out, most risottos are reheated, and boy, can you tell the difference), OH had the special, fresh haddock, perfectly cooked. Can't comment on the loos, though I've had to mark them in order to leave a review, because I didn't need to use them, but the staff were friendly and attentive, and we will definitely be returning to Sopranos on our next visit to Pompey.
