Red's True BBQ in Leeds have gone to great lengths to bring authentic American barbecue style food to the UK including having two huge 300-pound capacity smokers custom made in Oklahoma.

Food served includes barbecue favourites such as Texas hotlinks sausages (made in the restaurant), burgers, steaks, smoked chicken and slow cooked brisket. Also on the menu are pork and beef ribs rubbed with Red's own BBQ rub before being cooked "low and slow" for up to eight hours over Hickory and fruit woods before finishing over their pit barbecue.

Despite the cooking having its roots in the Deep South, meat and other ingredients are from closer to home with the restaurant making good use of Yorkshire's produce. Sauces, which are made daily at the restaurant, are available bottled to purchase.

Also on the menu is the ~2000 calorie "donut burger" - which features one of their hickory flame grilled burgers with melted cheese, smoked bacon, deep fried crispy onions and house made "dirty sauce" between two donuts.

Red's is located on Calls Lane, close to the Corn Exchange in Leeds city centre.

The restaurant does not accept reservations, except for parties of eight or more diners. These group bookings are not accepted on Friday/Saturday/Sunday evenings - please contact the restaurant directly for more details.

Red's True BBQ Brunch is served on the first Sunday of each month (from 9am to 12am, after which the usual menu is served), with offerings including waffles with the "country fry" - hot smoked sausage, pit beans, grilled tomatoes, mushroom, free-range egg, streaky bacon and hash browns - or waffles with blueberries and whipped cream.

Due to the popularity of the restaurant and a strict no-bookings policy (except for large groups. mid-week), diners may have to wait for a table for up to 90 minutes after 6:30pm weekdays and up to three hours after 7pm at weekends. Red's will take a mobile number for diners wishing to wait in nearby bars. The restaurant is less busy during mid-week lunchtimes, but still gets full - arrive at mid-day if you can.

Red's True Barbecue is opening a second restaurant in Manchester.

I went to Reds recently and had a nice meal. However, when it came to paying for the meal my friends gave me the cash and I passed this to the waitress, but she also charged me the full amount on my card. Although I don't think this was intentional and although I should have noticed this (I had just come out of hospital so my mind wasn't in the right place) I still believe the manager should have given me my money back or a complimentary meal. After speaking to the manager he advised that if I could find my receipt he would give me my money back/ look into it. I had a bank statement but apparently this was not enough (I don't know what a receipt would prove that a bank statement couldn't). Therefore, I would never eat here again. For the amount of money this place makes, to not offer a complimentary meal is disgraceful!!!! I am extremely dissapointed, I have eaten here around 8 times before and will never eat here again. It is a shame as I really did enjoy this place! Has anyone has any similar experiences?

Well, I loved Red's, even if Jay Rayner doesn't... After hearing loads about it, most recently from the aforementioned Guardian critic, I finally made it to Red's True BBQ in Leeds for dinner this week. I'd read a lot about people's "problems" getting a table so I made sure I got there early and prepared for a wait... I was quoted 90 minutes, but they phoned after less than an hour.

I ordered the "pit burger" which is a monster containing two burgers, a load of bacon, pulled pork and slow cooked beef brisket along with cheese, salad and sauces. It says something when you have to eat a burger with a knife and fork - but with this there really was no other way. I loved every bit of it, particularly the brisket.

I found the staff to be quick and friendly, with my only minor complaint being that it took a while to get our drinks.

I'm planning to go back next time I find myself in Leeds.

I visited Red's True Barbecue for lunch this week while working in Leeds. Having already tried their ribs and burgers, I thought I'd go for something different and had one of their sandwiches. Unable to choose between pulled pork and brisket, I went for their combo sandwich with both in. I also ordered a side of BBQ pit beans.

The sandwich was huge, and came piled high with meat, slaw, pickles and fried onions. It was delicious and I'd certainly have it again. It was also the first time I'd tried their beans - they had a beautiful smokey, savoury flavour to them and a little heat.

Service was quick and friendly as usual. A great little restaurant.

Visited Red's again this week to try their Donut Burger (basically one of their burgers made with doughnuts instead of a bun). It sounds wrong but it tastes so %^$*£@ right! You have to try this one.

This week saw my 7th visit (yes, I'm counting) to Red's BBQ in Leeds and the best yet. As ever, we had a bit of a wait for a table so we headed down the road to the new Brew Dog Bar (which is also great btw) that has just opened at the end of the road to wait until they called us.

Food was up to the usual high standards, having skipped lunch I decided to take the plunge and go for the Pit Burger. I've tried pretty much all the parts of the burger separately in one way or another and figured why not try them in one place. The burger really is huge - there's burger patties, their amazing pulled pork, tender brisket, bacon, cheese, salad (don't worry, you'll hardly know it is there) and sauce along with sauces. Being so big, it is a bit awkward to eat but a combination of cutting it up and loosing my inhibitions about getting food all over my face saw me though. If you've not been to Red's BBQ before then it probably isn't the best way to experience things like their pulled pork or brisket (first timers MUST have the ribs anyway) - but it is a great eat. I'll order it again, but not until I've explored a few other things on their menu.... next time I'm starving think I'll go for the bucket of bones.

As ever the staff were friendly and the service and ambiance made a good meal into a great night out.

Brilliant place. I've tried other rib joints in Leeds but nothing comes close to Red's True BBQ - the meat has that deep, smokey taste you just don't normally find outside the USA. The burgers are good enough, but it is the ribs that keep me going back.

Sure you have to wait ages for a table most days, but isn't that a sign the place does great food rather than something to rant about? Toilets were a bit rank last time I went, hence the low rating for that but to be honest it is a first and I've been there loads.

I made a third visit to Red's this week. Despite it being 8:30 and mid-week there was still a 45 minute wait for a table. Fortunately they offered to call us, so we headed off for a drink nearby.

Keen to try as many of their ribs as possible, I ordered their "bucket o bones". It is quite pricey at £21, but there is plenty of meat in there and as it comes with two sides it is unlikely you'll want anything else. The St Louis and baby back ribs were delicious and had plenty of meat on; but I was a little disappointed by the beef long rib which was dry and had little flesh on the bone - what was there had a good flavour.

    Service was friendly and quick.

Very poor food. Very arrogant way to run a restaurant. It's a kind of 'take it or leave it' attitude. That's ok while your new and people want to go to try it out but no good as a long term business plan.

If your the kind of person who likes Nandos then you'll love it. If you want proper BBQ food done the American way with succulent, tender, juicy ribs, tasty BBQ sauces, great service, excellent sides, forget it. Go to Macdonalds down the road. Far superior food! I hate Macdonalds by the way.

The BBQ sauces are shameful. The ribs are dry and chewy. Nothing has any flavour of smoke. The sides are stodgy and bland. You gotta try the rice dish. I've never had anything quite like it.

We've been a couple of times as we hoped it was teething problems. A few friends went too. Still horrendous.

    Overrated.

Expensive, slow service and mediocre food. I didn't think the ribs were up to much, dry and not as meaty as many I've had. Chips limp and salty. Saving grace the bbq sauce, that was good.

    I won't both returning.

After travelling 130 miles for our friends anniversary we chose Reds as it was highly recommended by other friends attending.

We went on the waiting list & was told our table should be ready for about 9:30 latest. 2 visits later (we had to wait at a nearby bar) we were assured at 9pm we would have a call within 30 minutes - nothing. At 10pm we went back again & after queuing with several groups of other angry customers who had been waiting over 3 hours we were told a table had just become available for us - ummmm strange that!

Upon speaking to the incredibly arrogant Manager after the waitress couldn't help we were told they are the most popular restaurant in Leeds & serve 750 covers so wait or go elsewhere....

The Manager who had still not apologised then stated we had been called twice as the log stated so ...... We had been sat in a bar 5 mins away since 8:30 with the phone in front of us - it had not rang - apparently we are liars!!!

After begging for a snack pending food, two sparrow portions of nachos were begrudgingly delivered with a further comment on the popularity & number of covers they do ........ Customer service skills clearly a side dish!

The Manager then stated when called the number went to voicemail - there is no voicemail on our phone but we are lying not his staff. The fact our network sends a text for EVERY missed call was irrelevant as was the fact the door staff told us our table had 'just' become ready, not that we'd been called twice & missed our slot!

An hour later our food arrives but not before a party of 8-10 behind us walked out in disgust, a huge argument kicked off at the door and another couple sat in despair opposite us!

We noticed waitresses crying, lots food going back and burgers being transferred between plates on the hot plate along with a room full of sad deflated faces!

What a shame! The food was barely tepid but very tasty but the service was unacceptable!

The attitude of the Manager was shocking verging on offensive and £125 later we finished eating at 11:45pm and left swiftly feeling thoroughly let down. Our poor friends whose anniversary it was went straight home!

The no booking is not working, people cannot plan a night waiting for a call 2-3 hours later which is then lied about (not just us - speaking to other tables). The staff cannot cope with the volume of clients & the Manager believes his restaurant is so successful & busy we are irrelevant & a minor annoyance!

How long will the curiosity causing popularity last for Reds - who knows but my friends & I will never return & will be ensuring everyone knows!!

    Great food but so slow.

Went before Christmas for an annual get together with friends - we're all big food lovers, but somehow none of us had managed go get Red's before. We had a bit of a wait to get seated which wasn't a problem at all... When we did get a table, the place was packed, but I understand that is par for the course here as it has been busy whenever I've walked passed and I've read alot about waiting times etc... but I understand they are used to it and cope. Well it didn't seem like it on our visit... it took nearly two hours for our food to arrive and although it was delicious we were starving by the time it turned up so we wolfed it down and probably didn't appreciate it as much as we should have done! The girl serving us was very apologetic, but didn't seem to be able to do anything to speed up our food.

    A taste of home!

I moved to the UK 6 years ago and apart from my family, the thing I've missed the most has been barbecue (in third place is sunshine!). I was starting to give up on ribs in this country until I visited Red's. The food is just perfect - ribs had the deep smoky flavour you only get from a proper smoker. The only barbecue food I've had in Britain that even comes close. Good work Red's!!

FINALLY managed to visit Red's after being turned away because they were too busy 3 times before. This time, we only had a short wait for a table. Shared pulled pork and ribs with my boyfriend - both of which were delicious. I loved the little bottles of sauces they put on the tables too.

Being so busy, the restaurant had a great atmosphere - there was a real buzz about the place. The service was good too, and although the staff seemed a bit rushed we weren't left waiting around.

Does Reds True Barbecue live up to the hype? I reckon so!

Great food - shame about the service. I've been about 8 times since they opened and tried all the ribs, burgers and most of the sides. I'd recommend them all, especially the St.Louis ribs which are ace and pulled pork which is just perfect. Their onion rings are truly epic - and the mac'n'cheese is brilliant - nothing like the dull British version you got fed at school!

Unfortunately my last visit was marred by poor service; everything seemed slow and the staff were really rude when one of our member queried their food. It was quite late on a Friday night so perhaps the staff were tired (I'm pretty sure I couldn't hack it!) but that isn't really an excuse. To be fair, on previous visits I've had okay, but if I'm honest, never GREAT service.

I don't mind having to wait for a table, and the fact that they'll let you go off and have a drink and call you when the table is ready is definitely better than places that insist on making you queue or hang around at their own (usually lousy) bars!

    Can't fault the toilets.

I called in here for lunch the other day after a meeting in Leeds.

Deep dried pickles lacked any punch from the pickle, and the batter was under cooked - crisp on the outside, but gooey in the middle.

The pit burger was better, it is an absolute mass of meat - brisket, pulled pork and two burger patties along with cheese, pickles, sauces and salad. The beef and pork were beautifully cooked; but the burger patties were a bit over cooked... but over all I really enjoyed the burger and very unusually for me it left me so full that evening I didn't have any dinner!

As I was about half through the huge burger, a waitress asked me if I'd like to see the dessert menu - I thought this was a joke so replied that I was fine... a few moments later the bill appeared! Coincidentally, this was around the same time as the restaurant was starting to get busy - I guess they wanted the table back...

Ultimately, this trip to Red's was a bit disappointing in places but it wasn't my first visit and it won't be my last.

Brilliant! The best BBQ food in Leeds and probably the UK. These guys do things properly, unlike some, and it shows. Ribs have the telltale pink smoke ring in the meat - never found that in this country before.

Downside is still the wait, obviously it is great that they are popular - but I kind of wish they took bookings... twice I've tried to visit and ended up having settle for second best down the road.

I am the most impatient person in the world, but somehow my friends managed to convince me to wait 2 hours for a table at Red's on Friday night. I'm glad I listened to them - this is absolutely the best restaurant in Leeds at the moment. I loved my ribs, mac and cheese and sweet potato chips. Wish you could book a table, but I guess they don't need to take bookings with being so popular. Going back next month - can't wait (but I guess I'll have to for a table...!)

Today was my fifth visit to Red's True Barbecue and definitely the best yet.

The first time I visited was in the week after they had opened, it would have been the last if the food hadn't have been so good (service was chaotic and slow). Now I'm pleased to say everything is up to the same standard as the food!

Yes, you have to wait a bit for a table in the evenings - but it is worth it. My personal favourite is the beef long ribs - like no other beef I've had, so tender! I've tried all the other ribs and I'm planning to work my way through the rest of the menu this winter.

Anyway, if you are sitting on the fence wondering if you should go or not then I'd suggest you stop worrying about it and make sure you get there early so you don't have too long to wait!

It's about a month since I ate at Reds. We went on an impromptu day out in Leeds and took a chance on getting a table. We had no problems on that weekday lunchtime.

The menu is vast, I actually felt there was too much choice, it took me ages to pick a dish! In the end I settled on a vanilla milkshake and a bucket o' ribs. The milkshake was delicious! The portion or ribs were massive - I actually struggled to get through them all, but they all tasted fantastic. I had sides of 'slaw and chips. Both of which were good.

The only thing was, I could have done with some wipes or something as my hands were very sticky after eating the ribs.

The service was friendly and knowledgeable.

So, we had to wait 40 minutes for a table, which is obviously annoying - but when you DO get to eat there you totally understand why it is so popular! Anyway, there are plenty of nice bars to wait in in the area. There were 5 of us and all had ribs except one who went for a pulled pork burger. All of it was amazing - the best ribs we've had. I loved the coleslaw without mayo, which somehow made the whole meal feel a little healthier (although that was undone by the mac'n'cheese which was great - but certainly not diet friendly!). Staff were really nice, and as you'd expect from a place with a wait for tables the atmosphere was really good - perhaps a bit noisy but not a problem. Go when you aren't in a hurry, have a few drinks while you wait for a table then enjoy!

I visited for a mid-week lunch had no trouble getting a table. It was virtually empty when we arrived at mid-day and although it filled up over lunchtime, it wasn't packed so lunchtime seems like a good time to get a table.

I ordered a half rack of St. Louis ribs with a hot Texas link sausage and sides of chips and macaroni cheese. The ribs were really good, especially a little extra of their excellent barbecue sauce. The Texas link sausage was nice (and huge!) but seemed to lack the spice I'd have expected having ordered the "hot" version. Mac'n'cheese was good too, but that and my chips could have been hotter.

Given how busy it seems to be in the evenings, I doubt I'd make a trip all the way to Leeds for an evening meal right now - but next time I'm looking for lunch in Leeds it'll be at the top of my list.

So it turns out good things really do come to those who wait...

I visited Red's this weekend with a small group of friends. When we arrived there were no tables available - we'd made the trip across town especially to try this place out so we waited it out despite being told it would take more than an hour. In the end it took quite a bit more than an hour, but we eventually got a space at one of the long tables.

By this point we were starving, so we probably went a bit overboard ordering - choosing to share a large portion of buffalo wings, nachos and jalapeno poppers. The starters were good (especially the wings) - but we were here for RIBS. Between us we had all three of the ribs on offer, baby back, saint louis and beef long ribs - all were tender and smoky. The winner in our book was the beef ribs. Only complaint from the food was that the chips were a bit on the cold side but perhaps this was because we neglected them when they arrived as we piled into the meat!

The staff were lovely, and although we waited a while to get a table (can't fault a place for being busy!!) everything else was quick and friendly.

    Can't wait to go back.

Me and the Mrs ate here earlier this afternoon, have to say it's one of the best meals we've had in Leeds in the last few years. Service was bang on and it was busy, I've seen comments around slow service but its only been open 2 weeks or so which makes me think that was teething probs, anyway, they seem to have got it together. Ribs were juicy Lucy and pulled pork literally pulled me off my chair. BBQ sauces were all nice as pie and the pie I had was also nice as...pie!

I'm planning a trip there again soon! Damn sure!!

When they said "low and slow" I didn't think they were talking about the service… It took about 25 minutes to get our order taken, double that for the food to arrive - very frustrating at a lunchtime. The waitress was lovely, but I don't think she really knew what she was doing - all looked a bit disorganised.

When it did eventually turn up, the food was okay, but we weren't blown away. My burger was good, tasty with all the trimmings - but my colleagues were disappointed by their brisket and pulled pork (both a bit dry and uninspiring). Ribs ordered by other members of the group seemed to go down better.

Other places nearby are offering similar food a lot quicker.

Best ribs in Leeds - but such slow service. Like the previous reviewer, I can't see why it took so long for us to get seated and our order taken - the place was busy but not packed. The staff were nice when you could find them though and did apologise for the wait.

Ordered the St Louis ribs and they were really good, plenty of meat and so tender it fell off the bone. Nice flavour from the rub and smoking. Also liked the bottles of sauce on the table.

The place is new so definitely a place to watch, when the do get the service sorted I reckon it is going to be amazing... but until then do not visit if you are impatient, hungry or in a rush for your food! Food is worth the wait though.

    Not all that.

Like other reviewers, I went because I'd heard the hype. The hype was certainly true in one respect, it took us ages to get a table - although they didn't *actually* seem that busy, just a bit disorganised. When we did eventually get a table it took way to long for somebody to take our order. Food did turn up pretty quickly and it was good, but not the best ribs I've tasted by a long way - a bit dry and not the greatest flavour. I've had better.

On the plus side, the restaurant looks pretty cool and loved the sauce bottles labelled with the old-skool dynamo labels. This is a new restaurant, so perhaps they just need a bit of time to settle in.

Loved it, loved it, loved it - I travel loads in the US and this is as close as you'll get in the UK. The meat was amazing, the sauces yummy and the atmosphere was like a fantastic bar - simply 100% all round.

I ate at Reds with my 2 kids and wife and we all enjoyed it. We'll definitely be going again, it was also great value!

    Well done Reds!!

At here for lunch after hearing the hype on twitter and wasn't disappointed. Others have talked the talk about serving great American food in Leeds - but at last here is somewhere that delivers!

St. Louis ribs were as they should be, meaty, tender and smoky. Sauces on the table - as the previous review says - were all good, and it is nice to have the choice. Tried a bit of my wife's pulled pork burger and again it was delicious - the pork was just so tender.

Nice surroundings, friendly staff - although clearly rushed off their feet as the place was packed.

Highly recommended - I will be going back for sure.

We ate here today after hearing loads about it from friends and on Facebook. After a short wait (the place was packed at 3pm on a Tuesday) we were seated by a really nice girl who was polite and seemed happy to be there.. Which is a change!

The food did take a little while but when it came we were literally gobsmacked! The portions were huge (good for us as we like big portions) and it tasted amazing! The meat was cooked perfectly in a way we were assured was normally only available in the US. They had a selection of sauces on the table (which are free unlike most places) and each tasted great, I'm not a huge fan of mustard but my husband is so he loved the mustard sauce, I loved the Kansas city one!!

I wanted to bath in the cheesecake we had for dessert rather than eat it.

All in all, it's amazing. You need to eat there!!
