Mumtaz opened in Leeds' Clarence Dock in 2009 and serves Indian food in the restaurant, has a takeaway counter and offers a wide selection of prepared cooking sauces for you to use at home.

The restaurant is very extravagant with high ceilings, bold decor and a piano.  Mumtaz in Leeds has a large private dining room towards the rear of the restaurant.  Mumtaz doesn't have a license for alcohol but does offer a wide selection of juices, lassis and other soft drinks.

Unusually. when it comes to paying at Mumtaz, you take the order sheet that has remained on your table throughout your meal to the till at the front.

Mumtaz itself doesn't have a car park, but they will validate your car parking ticket for free if you let them know you're parked within Clarence Dock.

I was invited to a wedding held at Mumtaz Leeds over the weekend. I was told by friends/relatives attending the wedding that the restaurant was designed beautifully.
I have to agree in that it was, however, things were let down. Sofa's around the reception area were not cleaned and cushions not placed properly or missing. Round glass vase on the table cracked. Yoghurt stains on sofa's and chairs. Dust around shelves and dirty cutlery & plates!

In terms of service, it was terrible! Not enough staff! There were approx 20 ppl per long table & only the front half of the tables were served! Ppl were having to shout for waiters, and often ignored. 2 ladies on my table had to physically get up and go to the kitchen area to ask for their starters to be served as they were forgotten, only the front part of their table was served! Also service was started at one end of the restaurant, leaving the back end ppl waiting a very long time! Waiters did not come back to refill food and drinks or ask if everything was ok.

Staff seemed clueless. One female staff member with a bandage on her nose (who was inappropriately dressed considering there was a Muslim wedding being held!) kept swanning around as though she was on a catwalk flicking her hair and shouting at some of the waiters in front of wedding guests!

To top it all off, the top man Mr Mumtaz himself was wondering around amongst the guests boasting about his restaurant and how much he had spent on it!

All in all, staff are extremely unprofessional, from the main man himself down to the waiters. Service terrible. However, the food was tasty albeit a tad cold, but the service/attitude of staff left a sour taste!

Mumtaz Leeds is not what it makes out to be and it certainly does not know how to organise/serve weddings. So if you are thinking about having a wedding there, think again & research very well because when you spend top money you expect top class service in every aspect! Wedding was spoilt by unnecessary things. Shame on you Mumtaz Leeds!

I ate at Mumtaz in Leeds after a recent conference at the Alea Casino. We hadn't booked and arrived around 6:30 on a Saturday evening.

Upon arrival and walking through some rather large doors, we were taken to a table for two passing a shop/takeaway order point and dessert display in a section that felt as though it was a corridor to the toilets (around 5 tables for 2 there). The restaurant is very grand inside and has high ceilings and the dining area itself is massive! The decor is quite elaborate with giant chandeliers (red and black). There were quite a few large groups of people there, which is a good sign at 6:30 I think and the other tables in the restaurant had filled up by the time we were leaving.

The menu was large, and took quite a lot of reading through. We ordered poppadoms and a pickle tray while we perused it. The pickle tray is rather expensive at nearly three pounds, but it does have 8 'pickles' (including olives which I've never seen on an Indian pickle tray before!). My starter was a seekh kebab and for main I had a king prawn biryani. On ordering the biryani I ordered it to be medium (choice of mild or medium). All the food was very tasty and had a nice flavour to it, but I couldn't eat it all - the portion was too large for me.

Mumtaz is unlicensed but does have a selection of around 10 juices/lassis and other soft drinks to choose from. Incidentally, you don't seem to be able to get tap water we received a bottle of 'Mumtaz filtered water'.

I thought the AmEx bill holder on the table was a little strange, it turns out that they write your order in there as you go along and then you take this bill to the till at the front (not really clear if you've never done this before) where you pay an amount based on the hand written notes, rather than seeing an itemised bill.

    A few niggling points…
Service didn't seem as smooth as it could have been, it took a third attempt of ordering a bottle of water to get one, cutlery was missing before and during the meal and needed to be requested and the table that we were seated at didn't quite seem big enough for two people ordering a main each and a nan (no rice) with glasses and a jug of juice.

All in all, a decent meal, but not really somewhere that I'd look to rush back to.
