Our lively WI lunch club recently visited the Hare and Hounds at a lunchtime sitting. The decor was quite grubby and mismatched, however the staff were attentive. Unfortunately the menu was either the set on printed on sheets or the extensive menu which was unfortunately put on a blackboard in such small writing it was hard to read, let alone it was in an awkward place to view!! The food was a little overpriced, but arrived quickly. I was a little concered that wooden boards were used to plate up some of the food. in all not good.

From the outside, the Hare & Hounds looks unremarkable - and I suspect many pass by without giving it a second thought. They are missing out. The pub is divided into a bar area and a separate dining room - both of which are cosy and informal. We opted to eat in the bar area as it was quiet.

My starter was stuffed confit of rabbit shoulder, celeriac remoulade. The rabbit was beautifully cooked, moist flavoursome meat surrounded by crispy skin. The remoulade was also good, although slightly too salty for my liking. The rabbit and remoulade went together very well. My main was ham hock accompanied by pickled pineapple (a lot better than it sounds), a fried egg and triple cooked chips. The ham hock was served off the bone, which I hadn't expected - but it was well cooked.

    Service was friendly and attentive.
