Being unfamiliar with Chichester, we found Clinches by accident. What a good decision we made to eat there. We were made very welcome and the food was very good. The starters were of a good size, taste and presentation. My partner's pate followed by a steak was tasty and my whitebait followed by moules mariniere was cooked to perfection.

A reasonably priced pinot complimented our food and we had no trouble in purchasing the water to go with our meal.

We found the staff very friendly and we shall return soon.

We can only imagine that the previous reviewer dined soon after the restaurant had been taken over.

It's been a long time since I've been to Clinchs and I was looking forward to seeing what the new owners had done with the place. I visited the restaurant with my mother and one of her friends and at first glance, the service was very good. The young waiter helped my mother's elderly friend down the steps to her table but unfortunately, this is where the good service ended.

We were offered the option of wine with our lunch which we declined, luckily, because a diner at the next table informed me they didn't have any anyway. The simple order of a sparkling mineral water seemed to confuse our waiter as he wasn't sure they had any. Staff should know what drinks they do and don't stock - they shouldn't have to rush off in the middle of an order to check.

For our lunch, we had the thai fish cakes twice and the chicken, bacon and leek pie. The pie came with the option of mash or chips and though I specifically requested chips, my pie still turned up with mash.

The fish cakes were grossly disappointing. Fish cakes should be crisp and should actually taste like fish. The fish cakes served at Clinchs were soggy, tasteless mush. There was no breadcrumbing or batter, just a sort of wet, flabby pinkish paste that didn't taste like fish. The chicken pie had very little chicken in it; it both looked and tasted like it had come out of a tin. The gravy was very sticky and gloopy. The peas were old and grey.

This restaurant boasts a nice menu with some competitive prices but the quality is horrendous and the staff were mostly clueless. I will definitely never be visiting Clinchs again.

Like the other reviewer we were firm favourites of the 'old' Clinch. We visited today and were immediately impressed by the complete make over. It was welcoming with a nice grey and lime decor that grows on you. Spanish music playing, great waiting staff and fabulous breakfast left us knowing the 'new' Clinch would be a continuing favourite. We had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, with toasted ciabatta and the Spanish hash. Followed this with really fresh wholemeal toast and jams. Bread lovely and fresh and on a Sunday. Chef visited to ensure all was well and to chat (just like the old one did I may add). The young lady who served had time to chat and made us so welcome. We have now booked for a pre theatre dinner and look forward to return. Great specials board too. Good luck 'new' Clinch.

Have been regular diners at the 'old' Clinch's for years, so sad to see it go and keen to see how the new one measured up. Last week, tried the full English breakfast + tea and was most impressed. The new menu looks very tempting and reasonably priced. New decor very pleasant and staff very attentive. Only downside is gent's loo - never was up to much and could still do with some attention. Get that right and it will be 5* ratings for everything!
