Visited during half term in October 2012 - wasn't very impressed by the kids menu choices, but fortunately there was plenty on the "small plates" menu them suited them - they loved the frittata and goujons of fish. Hubby was equally struck on his spicy beef poboy sandwich (huge!). I had the bouillabaisse which was so good, I insisted we came back again later in the week so I could have it again!
Surprised to see complaints about service on here, when we visited the staff were lovely and service was quick. We'll be back next time we visit Portland! x

A bit pricey for Portland - but good food in nice surroundings.

Very frustrating experience. Service was chaotic and felt brisk. Food so so, but I have certainly had better for the money. Not local, but if I'm back in the area this won't be my first choice!

Food very, very good by cafe standards and the service was warm and friendly. Atmosphere was odd, but in a good way, it isn't often you go to a cafe in a tourist destination with such a nice buzz about it.
Oh, and that coffee machine - WOW! Not just for show either, the coffee at Chesil Beach Cafe is great.
Well worth a visit!

Visited with friends for lunch. Superb food, the "poboy" sandwiches (if you can call them that!) are brilliant - the spicy "pulled beef' was sublime. Nice surroundings, definitely cafe not restaurant - shame the loos are outside, but not a major issue. Staff were smiling which is always a good sign.

Lovely little cafe serving really good food. I had mussels in a creamy cider sauce - they were just beautiful. Hubby loved his peri peri chicken too.
Spotlessly clean.

Enjoyed a delicious meal here tonight. I think some people are being particularly harsh just because the owner has been on TV (or maybe I am just easily pleased!).
My only criticism is the place doesn't have much of an atmosphere as an evening venue - but I thought bought food and service were very good. I'm visiting the area from some 200 miles away, so I can't say I'll be returning anytime soon but I think if I was in the area I'd go back again.

I am really surprised by the reviews here. I went here for a meal with my husband & kids last week and whilst it was not amazing, we had no problems at all. Good food, polite service and I thought the prices were seemed pretty reasonable for the quality of food. Kids well catered for.
I'd recommend to friends.

Mmm this is a difficult one, we went, a table of four last Saturday evening. The menu was a little underwhelming and several things not available. We thought the prices a little on the steep side, with the wine definitely overpriced.
The venue is low on atmosphere with bright lights and a canteen appearance. The food was good, mussels plump and the cider sauce excellent but what happened to the crusty bread it was a dense chunk of mmm not sure perhaps chilli bread with a melting chunk of butter on it. What it needed was a basket of crusty white bread for soaking up the juices. The fish and chips was okay but small piece of fish. The Vongole, well, no excuse for not having clams, it came with mussels. You would think after other reviews which have complained about this they could have sorted it by now. The two waitresses tried hard but one of them complaining about feeling tired, not good.
Overall I wanted to like it but not sure I would go again.

Last Saturday night we had high expectations as we had booked in at the new cafe on Chesil beach. The wine was good. Our main dish was very poorly presented and quite inedible.
There was one good waitress, the others were clearly untrained and not interested.
The bill was.. under mutterings of.. ' expensive and we won't be returning'...to offer this to local people is a big mistake.
