The Empire Theatre (just opposite Harrogate Theatre) has been reborn as an Indian restaurant. Owned and managed by Nick Rahman, the theatre has undergone extensive refurbishment to return it to its original glory. Nick has many years of experience working in Kashmiri restaurants within Yorkshire and is hoping to bring high end Asian food to the town.
The menu is full of South Asian cuisine prepared using locally sourced ingredients and there are a number of sharing platters. There will be an iced fish bar which will display fresh seafood. There is a separate bar area where diners can eat from a special grazing menu. This area can also be used for private dining and conferences.
Cardamom Black opens for dinner seven nights a week.

In a nutshell...
- Upon arriving we were left to stand, whilst waiting to be seated, for 20 minutes without drinks or menus.
- Waited to long for menus when eventually seated
- Waited an obscene amount of time for our starters, with one of the orders having been forgotten about.
- Waited again for our mains to arrive.
- The acoustics are such that if a family member was talking to me from the other side of the table I couldn't hear what they were saying.
As the bill came I suggested to the waiter that we might have a small discount on the bill (much to the disgust of my family who don't like speaking up) due to the inconvenience’s which had occurred during the evening. He went to speak to ‘the manager’ who suggested that as it was his (the waiters) area he had to deal with the problem. The waiter, who had been nothing but courteous and engaging all evening suggested that he might buy us a round of drinks. After some discussion it became clear that the cost of this round of drinks would come out of his pocket. Needless to say we didn't accept the drinks and, one week on, management have not offered any reply to an email I sent.
For this reason alone I would not eat in this restaurant again. This kind of ‘management’ was practiced all to readily when I was 17 (many years ago now). The restaurant needs to address its company policies and look at the ethical side of how staff are treated by management... and employ a reasonable number of staff for a Saturday night.

I was visiting my friend in Harrogate from Cheshire and she had made reservations for myself and 3 others at Cardamom for the first time for them as well. What an experience it was fantastic, from the start of the evening to the end we were looked after as though we were royalty, waiters were helping us to choose our meal, and Nick the owner was very attentive all evening making sure we had a fabulous time, which we did.The decor was breath taking from the moment you walked in, in fact it was like visiting a monument with every body taking pictures. If you haven't been make sure its your next night out.

Only teething troubles prevented the service been 5 stars, but once the nerves have past and organisation improved then I have no doubt it will be the place to go for a sit down Indian meal. Our waiter was exceptionally attentive to our needs and we were made to feel really welcome, he even chose our meals after we said what we wanted (spice wise) showing he knew the menu well. The food was exceptional and a real taste explosion, it is well worth a visit. :-)
p.s
Look out for the taps in the toilets as they are brilliant.
