My wife and I eat at the Mare & Colt regularly, taking advantage of many offers which are e-mailed to us. We find the staff most friendly and welcoming and they make the experience of visiting a 'routine' food-outlet something special (of course, you have to make an effort, too, and talk to them as if they are human). So many people think that 'service' is a one-way street. The food is good value-for-money fare and the portions reasonable. The selection of drinks is acceptable / good. Service is above average for this class of institution. Hygiene appears good. It is easily accessible for an out-of-town venue and has a reasonable car-park. What else do you need ? - it does what you expect it to be able to do.

Avoid this pub!!!!! After visiting numerous chef and brewer pubs most of which have been quite good, this is the second time I've eaten here and it's a complete shambles. I went with my partner and three children. The attitude of the staff was terrible, she slammed the puddings on the table and seemed very cold.
The food( if you could call it that) was of a very, very low standard.
The peas on the kids meals looked as though they had been on a hot plate for days and where very hard.
The chips were not cooked properly(they were not cooked the first time)
My partner and I had fillet steak(supposedly) with mash(tasted like leftovers from Christmas which was over two weeks ago). My partners steak was more like a offcut from a cheap casserole steak. Why they patted the mash thin like a pancake is beyond me as it was stone cold.
The chocolate fudge pudding was served cold with cheap ice cream and the raspberry brownie was rock hard and ice cream was also terrible.
The next nearest chef and brewer pub is the running horse, just passed the Bewdley bypass, this pub has got it right and makes the mare and colt look like roadside trailer cafe in comparison.
If your a regular at the mare and colt you may have become accustomed to the poor food and service, I suggest you visit the running horse which offers the exact
same menu. You will see exactly what I mean.
In these tough times I have no pity for businesses that have such poor standards and laid back attitude to customer service.
This was one of the worst pubs I have ever eaten at.

I eat at the Mare & Colt at least twice a week and find the staff and management to be really friendly and helpful. The food it always fantastic. I would always reccommend it to any one I know.

I visioted the Mare and Colt last wek with my Wife. We had the Steak Burger and The great British Cod and Chips. The Cod was not Cod and I suspect I was given Pollack or Coalfish and expected not to notice. A bit like serving Lamb instead of Steak ? The Batter was enormous and engulfed a thin and dry piece of fish that was not the flaky white of Cod. The fish I was serviced was Grey with a fibrous dry texture, not flaky at all. The only thing that was flaky was the attitude of the larger than life girl who served me and to whom I complained. I was then tole that the fish must have been Cod because that was what it said on the box and that the Pollack usually had the skin left on. I insisted that the fish was not Cod and that I was unable to eat it. The girl followed this up by throwing £7 on the table and no apology. As you may have guessed, I will not be returning to this terrible place. It's really all about the people and whoever runs this local Pub has the wrong attitude and it has cascaded through all of the staff including the person who cooks the food and at least one person who serves customers.
To think we could have gome to just about any other Pub or eatery and actually had some decent food and service. There are so many really good value places to eat these days offering excellent quality food,
why can't the people at this Pub work it out ?.
