Akbar's is a small chain of Indian restaurants run by Shabir Hussain. The restaurant serves a wide selection of Indian and Balti dishes and opens for dinner 7 days a week.
Akbar's is a little way off the M1 at Junction 34 (the Meadowhall junction) towards Rotherham. This Akbar's near Sheffield was established in 2007 and was the 6th in the portfolio of restaurants. The restaurant has a car park.
For those seeking traditional Lahore dishes - and lovers of offal in general) they also have paya (lambs feet), gurda kapoora (kidneys and testicles also known as taka tak), ojri (lambs stomachs), nihari (beef with bone marrow) and haleem (a thick, soup like curry).

Best part of this restaurant is the toilets at least you can see what you are doing. Akhbar's food was poor the service even worse. It was loud and very dark, the staff too busy talking to each other and when you complain because you food is unpalatable you are told we have more business than we need don't come back.
My advice - give Akhbar's a miss.

The first thing you'll notice when you go into Akbars is - nothing. It's really, really dark. Once your eyes adjust, you can see the beautifully carved wooden panels and screens that are positioned around the bar area and restaurant. The restaurant area is slightly better lit, but I did see several people in the restaurant using torches to read the menu.
Unusually, food is delivered - piles of karahi stacked perilously high - by the chefs. Tandoor dishes are bought on the tandoor skewers. This adds a little theatre to the meal.
To start I had lamb samosa, they were good - crisp outside and generously spiced lamb inside. Clearly I was in the mood for minced lamb that day as my main was a karahi keema mattar (minced lamb with peas) - again well cooked and with a nice medium heat to it.
Our naan bread arrived on those odd "naan trees" which although I appreciated the space-saving on the small tables at Akbars, I dislike them as they let cool the bread down quickly. That aside, the naan was delicious and had a beautifully soft consistency.
Fans of over-ordering in Indian restaurants will be disappointed by the lack of side dishes - but probably won't go hungry, portions are generous.
Service was unfortunately a bit poor, with drinks not being offered once (perhaps they couldn't see...). One other quibble was that a few of the (bottled) beers we had delivered were warm - I suspect this was due to high turnover at the bar and lack of fridge space.
Akbars gets very busy (as does their car park), and seem very reluctant to take bookings (although didn't say they won't take them when I phoned to try and make one) - so make sure you turn up early (I went early on a Monday evening and it was packed, so would imagine Friday/Saturday nights are even busier).
