The first Fish and Chip shop opened in the UK in 1860, and – from meagre beginnings – the takeaway has grown to become a staple of every English town. And it’s not just fish and chips anymore. From Indian, to Iranian to Indonesian: there is a take away restaurant to suit every appetite and budget.

Surveys suggest that the average British person has around 2,500 takeaways over the course of their lifetime, and that number is on the up. So, why has takeaway food become a staple of our diets?

England fans’ minds may have been firmly on the footy during this afternoon’s nail biting World Cup game against Slovenia – but once the victory was secured their minds soon turned food.

During the match we saw the number of visitors to our site drop substantially, while all eyes were focused on the World Cup match – but as soon as the match was over, we saw a big spike in visitors as the hungry fans started searching for food.

Unsurprisingly, most people this evening visiting our site were looking to order takeaway online – with pizza being the most searched for food.

There is no mistaking the fact that us Brits love our chips with an amazing 255 million portions of fish & chips served up each year in the nation’s chippys alone.
